I started my career in science, studying physics in college, and working as a research assistant and computer programmer for several years at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. I continue to work in science, currently working as a writer at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography.

I have been a freelance writer, researcher-for-hire, and occasional documentary videomaker for the past 15 years. My projects have ranged from public policy research for lobby groups and candidates for political office to science editing and consulting, to technical writing for software concerns. Though my experience is conceptually all over the map, the significant projects I've taken on are each about marshalling a set of complex facts, and presenting them in a readable and possibly entertaining form.

Much of my work is in the computer industry, and I have written more than a dozen books in that field, ranging from 50 to 350 pages, along with innumerable shorter projects.
